Great Visit and Rest of Vacation

Wednesday we took a quick trip to visit Bubbe & Papa and Aunt Jill & Uncle Andy. It was a very nice time. We went right to Bubbe's and mostly just relaxed. Shara spent quite a bit of time working on her huge 1st grader workbook. Then Aunt Susan came over and we all played Sorry. That was a lot of fun - Shara taught Aunt Susan how to play and really stressed to us all the "proper" way to send someone back to their start. Let's just say it's a little violent. Then Aunt Jill and Uncle Andy came over with dinner and Susan went home and brought me back her homemade almond paste. Shara sat between Jill and Bubbe, of course. After dinner Shara watched American Idol and loved it. We now have it on our season pass list.

We spent the night at Jill's. Shara went to sleep pretty quick, though it was already after 9 when we got to her house. I ended up staying up with Jill until after 2AM. When I got into bed, it was rather freezing. I knew it wasn't so cold that we'd get hypothermia, but I did go in search of a blanket. Finding none, I took my jacket and put it over her. Shara didn't seem to be bothered by the cold, but when we woke up, I asked if she was cold and she replied, "I'm freezing", so we hopped out of bed and stood for a while in front of the wood stove. It felt wonderful! We had a fun morning of relaxing and making and eating breakfast.

The trip home was uneventful. Shara spent most of the time playing on my phone.
The next day we went bowling and got ice cream at Peaceful Meadows, even though it was pouring out. It's never a bad time for ice cream.

Saturday we went to the Lakeville Library for their "Love your library" rally. It was a lot of fun looking at the books in the kids room and especially watching Ryan's Tall Tales. Shara was rolling - she's a tough audience, but he was really funny. That evening we did dinner and a movie - Selena Gomez's Cinderella movie. It was cute.

Sunday was the culmination of the 5 week food drive program/partnership with Messiah Baptist and we were invited to go to their Sunday service. It was very inspiring and Rev. Ed did a fantastic sermon. I think it was wasted on Shara, and probably the other little kids too, but they were all so good and well behaved. We stayed for lunch and conversation. The rest of the day was spent with me cooking and Shara bouncing on the bed and going through her homemade obstacle course.

Yes We Can

On Martin Luther King Jr. day, Shara and I met some of the other kids and parents from church at the Messiah Baptist Church in Brockton for a planning day to help stock their food pantry to feed 100 families. The following two weeks were spent soliciting donations. Today we went back and helped separate packs of frozen chickens - Shara collected the plastic wrappers (and these were two whole, fully wrapped chickens, packed together with more plastic). Then we moved upstairs and helped bag the groceries. It was slow going, but we all chipped in and put together about 200 bags of various groceries for families to pick up tomorrow at the church. Shara really had a great time and loved helping out. She wouldn't say what she liked the best because she thought the whole day was great. I agree, it was a very good day.

Justin Bieber

Today I took Shara to see the Justin Bieber movie and I was surprised she enjoyed it so much. She really liked the music and dancing. I think this just added to her desire to be a performer - too young to be one of the screaming kids, but she does get embarrassed when she sees the girls screaming, etc. and don't get started on kissing - mommy & daddy have to leave the room if there's any of that on tv! Tomorrow she's going to buy her first album and load it on her MP3 player. I'd like to say my first album was something more sophisticated, but I seem to remember the big Sean Cassidy poster on my door for quite a while.

Earlier in the day our neighbor and her kids came over and the kids played in the snow and went sledding down the mound. They had a fun time, but it was cold! Shara was getting into going fast down the hill and even took a running jump onto the tube.

Shara lost her tooth!

Last night Shara woke us up to let us know she lost her tooth. It was bothering her when she went to take a drink of water so she pulled a little and it came right out!

She's also feeling much better, though when we took her temp last night, it was 103.7. Didn't scare me as much as the night before that when she was practically hallucinating. Last night she was acting fine except that her stomach was still bothering her. This morning it's down to 99.7, so I suspect tomorrow everyone will be back to their normal schedule. Alan's home with her today.

Lori Tunewicz-Gavin I think our culture is one of the few that has people against it. It is the norm in most of the world. It has always been the right thing for me. I'm too anxious otherwise. Especially when they're sick. Hope Shara's better today. 12 hours ago · LikeUnlike.

Laurie Lessner no, she's eating some oatmeal now. Had a couple of bites of the cream of wheat, but didn't like it enough to continue. She has kept all of this down and is now chatting quite a bit. Fever still at 102 this morning, but certainly cheerier now that she's had some food in her. 10 hours ago · LikeUnlike.

Jill Lessner Looker Glad that she is on the mend, I hope that she gets all better quickly. about an hour ago · LikeUnlike.

Laurie Lessner she still has a fever, but she's acting better. Ate a good dinner. Has a sense of humor. Last night was a little scary for all of us - scary dreams and not all while she was sleeping. No signs of that tonight. She's sleeping with us again - Alan and her are already up there. I'm having a few moments of laurie-time.

Thank you to all who have been sending your wishes for a quick recovery. I pass these along to Shara and I think it makes her feel better. Neither of us can complain too much though. We're so lucky that we go through this very infrequently. Tonight she commented that being sick is sort of fun. I've been telling her that she doesn't need to show me she's sick - the thermometer tells me that and if she wants to be happy, be happy. She still can't go to school tomorrow!

Flu?

Shara missed valentines day yesterday and square one art today. Fever, not eating, stomach cramps, but she did smile and made a joke, so i'm not super worried. Just trying to keep the fever down. Assume she'll be out tomorrow too. At least this didn't happen during vacation week.

Dinner with Family

The other night we were very happy to have Aunt Jill and Uncle Andy come for an overnight. We had a really good dinner of Bazlama, Kale & Chickpeas with Indian Spices and Cardamom Carrots. But the best part was the company. The only thing that would have made it better was if they could stay for longer. But Shara will get a nice visit with them this summer when she goes to Camp Lookers again.

Earlier in the day Shara played outside with her friend from next door and also had a great time. She made a thank you card as soon as she came inside, because it was that much fun.

Much better today

I think shara need to get back to her usual routine. She also had fun at dance with her friends and I think her teacher makes her feel like a big kid because I noticed when she tells shara to do something, shara's very attentive and serious. When she got home 2night, she set the table and was acting very mature. We all enjoyed each others company and she only had a fairly small fit when I didn't understand a joke she was trying to me. But she recovered very fast.

Tired?

Not sure what's been going on the past couple of days, but shara's acting awful to us. She is very dramatic and cries that we don't love her or care about her and we treat her horribly and we break her heart. I can't believe she really thinks that but something is not right. Hopefully it's just the weather and her being tired.

Dining in the Dark

No, this isn't really about Shara, but since my mother won't get on Facebook, I have to post this here.
A really good overview of the night is at FortySomethingLife's blog. And here are some from the Boston Globe:

Snow in my eyes

Snow day #26 tomorrow. We've been in the house for a month now. Food is running low but tom and alan are going to take the kids out hunting tomorrow. Maybe I'll snowshoe over to shaws and see if there's anything left on the shelves. There are rumors they have apples stored in the back room. No one seems to want those, but the poptarts are flying off the shelf.

They say spring is coming in six weeks. I think we should invest in those chickens now. Maybe a cow too, while we're at it.
