Tooth extraction

I'm so proud of Shara. the other day she was determined to go to Rev. Paul's installation without the bother of a very loose tooth. When we got home from the morning church service she went into the bathroom with a tissue and proceeded to twist out her tooth. It's the canine. Then when she was fine she says to me, "I need a teabag". I got her one down and was then dismissed and she took care of the rest. Easy peasy.

Lost Canine

Tooth, that is. Shara lost her tooth, which had been bothering her for about a week or so, on the fourth of July, in the pool! She took a bite of my falafal wrap (awesome!), loved it, but got a funny look on her face. I asked her about it and she said her tooth hurt. I noticed she was bleeding, she freaked, I got her a napkin, she took out the napkin, gave it to Alan, who then noticed the tooth in the napkin. She didn't even realize it, but there was a good amount of bleeding so I remembered (like I'd ever forget) Dr. Joe taking out my tooth at Gershon's way before it was ready, and me bleeding all over. He got me a wet tea bag to bite down on. It worked. We're not sure if it was the compress action, the tea or the caffeine, but we tried it with Shara and it worked like a charm. We're waiting to hear if the tooth fairy came last night. Shara wrote a note asking her name and why she collected teeth. I'm about to wake her up so maybe Shara will write about it later.

Cosmic Birthday

Fun (and easy) 9th birthday today. A local bowling alley does "Cosmic Bowling". It was a nice group of ten girls, most from Shara's class, who came. What a great age - they pretty much took care of themselves. Shara & Keira took the first kid to arrive, up to get shoes. Then as the other kids came, they keep adding the new girl to the pack up to the shoe counter. Alan helped get them set up with the lanes and learn how the scoring worked. After a game we took a break for some pizza, which was order and paid for online, and delivered right to the bowling lanes. Then more playing and two hours goes by really quickly - the one group who got started early finished their first before lunch and then started another after lunch. The other group, which ended up being a little bigger, didn't finish until right before cake. And cake was eaten while Shara opened presents because we had about 20 minutes left before the official end of the party!

The kids were really cute and had fun bowling (a lot of fun bowling), dancing, and really just hanging out with each other. It looked like a good chunk of the time was sitting around the ball return, rolling the balls back and forth to each other.

Now you see her...

Last Friday was the Ice Cream Social at school. This is an annual event and much loved by all the kids. In the past, Shara pretty much stayed with one of us and played with her friends very close by. In fact, year 1 she was glued to us most of the evening. Well this year was a totally different story. Now that she's a big second grader, we're finding her comfort level has increased quite a bit. It was hard to even know where she was most of the night and she had to be reminded that, "no we don't go to the playground without asking your parents, without a grown-up, and especially when it's almost dark out."

So what I realized from this evening is we're not actually sharing as many experiences with Shara as we used to. At least not directly enough to generate the detailed blog postings. That's not to say we don't do things together, but often Shara's more on her own, like at the social. Or the other evening we went to the Raynham Public Library to hear the Barn Goats, a jazz band of members from our church. My work and private life are certainly converging in strange ways! Most of the night Shara hung out by either Alan or myself, playing on her phone. But then I was able to bring her downstairs to see what the other kids were doing and ended up leaving her while she played truth or dare or some other dangerous game. She certainly had a good time and didn't want to leave, but exactly what she did isn't clear. Nothing was broken, but I seem to think coffee drinking happened. Good thing it was decaf!

Sunday we had church and Shara volunteered to be the star of a reenactment we did in class of the Good Samaritan. She hammed it up, doing a good job of moaning as the hurt traveler. Then she wanted to be the director and we had to have a talk on the way home, where I ended up hurting her feelings and had to explain that teaching is my job and I have certain rules I have to follow and she can't act like the teacher, etc. All was ok after a bit. She got upset just as I pulled up to the gas pump and I had to leave the conversation, which was good because it gave me time to think of a way to explain why she couldn't be the teacher/boss. When I got back in the car, she had put tissues on her eyes, under her glasses and put her hands over her ears and started humming. I guess she didn't want to hear what I had to say, but she eventually did and all was well.
She spent the rest of the day, and a bit too late into the evening, at Oma and Jidor's while Alan and I went to the Hunger Games and out to dinner.

Time for Glasses

When we had Shara's last parent-teacher conference, we asked her teacher if she noticed Shara having difficulty reading the board. She said she didn't notice anything but Shara was called back for a 2nd screening for the eye tests. We didn't receive any calls or notice from the nurse because she passed the 2nd time. We did give the nurse a call to check though and she mentioned that it's always possible Shara remembered the answers and responded correctly the 2nd time and she recommended an eye doctor appointment to make sure. It was pretty obvious she needed to go when she put on my glasses and could see a bit better than without. She would also go up to the clock on the stove because she couldn't read it clearly from 8 feet away. So the other night we had her appointment and she does need glasses. She picked out some very cute ones.

Last Friday we had dinner & a movie night. We saw one of my favorite movies from when I was young, Gigi. Shara loved it. I did have to preempt it by saying that women back then didn't realize they could be unmarried and still happy, yada yada, women's rights talk. The week before we saw Brigadoon. Had to say about the same thing. But we were able to look beyond that aspect and enjoy the dancing, singing and romance.

Around the neighborhood

Well it's finally happened. Shara didn't want to join me to pick up the farm order the other day because she was too busy playing with the neighborhood kids. How fun! She went over to her friends the other day and came traipsing home with several kids in tow. It looks like they played tag a bit, ran through the house to the front yard, back through the house to the basement, got some juice bags, back outside, then it was time for them all to go home!

Monday Shara went to the dentist and had a great report. Later she had her 7 year old checkup and we talked to the doctor about her stomach aches. To make sure nothing serious was going on, Shara had her first blood test. That wasn't very pleasant, but then the x-ray wasn't bad. We got good news that she doesn't have celiac (wheat allergies) but she does need to drink Miralax daily for a couple of months. After that, she'll need to make sure she continues to drink a lot of water and eat her veggies and fruits. Probably have to lower the amount of dairy as well. The doctor said some people need to eat well all the time. We'll see how things go once her tummy starts feeling better all the time. She'll probably have a better appetite and then eat more, so she'll get enough of the good stuff.

Last night we got to go to school and meet her teacher and see her class. That was fun and it was great to see Shara so excited about being in school. She really loves it. We can see how the teachers are gearing up for the MCAS though. But it makes sense to memorize adding numbers because when the problems become more complex, you don't want to be wasting time counting on fingers.

Today though was a sad time for all of us. We went to pick up the CSA order and when we got home, couldn't find Alan. My phone wasn't getting a connection so I couldn't hear the voice mail he left, but he called and said he was at the animal hospital with George. We knew he was getting thin, but everything else seemed ok. Yesterday he actually let Shara pet him, and that's what got Alan suspicious. He was certainly happy, but when Alan came home today and pet him, George almost fell over. He also got sick when Alan fed him some tuna juice to try to get him to drink something. Then it looked like he was trying to go to the bathroom but couldn't. So he packed him up and took him to the vets and they were pretty sure they felt a tumor and it wasn't a blockage. They couldn't be sure without several tests and leaving him overnight, but we decided long ago that we wouldn't put another pet through what Scratchy went through and decided to end any potential suffering. The doctor said his body had already started shutting down. Shara and I went to the hospital to say goodbye and he was very tired looking but purred the whole time. Alan stayed with him as he died and it was quick.
Good bye Georgie. We miss you.
RIP Scratchy and George

School's Great!

Oh it was a fun first day of 2nd grade and she knew lots of kids in her class. Today was gym, it was fun, and she saw some friends from last year during lunch, so it sounds like they'll have recess together. It's rainy so it was indoor recess today. I think the only thing she finds disappointing about school is that she's almost never pictured or a mention in the newsletter. I told her it was probably because I wasn't at school as often as the other moms and they're the ones who take the pictures. That it has nothing to do with her. I really believe that too and it's natural to take pictures of your friends' kids rather than someone you don't really know.

However, she was very happy when I got home this evening. She even helped cook dinner - she asked if we could have the bacon wrapped dates (we got the ingredients at the market yesterday) and I was thinking it would be good to have because she wasn't going to like the eggplant I had planned. Originally she planned on making them with me but then lost interest last night. I thought she'd like to today and she did. I really just got her set up, showed her how to do one and left her alone to do the rest while I cooked dinner. She must have eaten 8 of them. And I'm just remembering we forgot to put in the nuts - just prosciutto and blue cheese. Yummy. She wants to take the leftovers (only 3 left!) for snack tomorrow.

Busiest time of year

Shara had her magical party on saturday. She had a great time! Mike Bent did the show and he was so much fun. Everyone was rolling and he involved all the kids with the tricks. Since she was the birthday girl, she got to be the assistant with several. She was quite the little ham. I also love seeing her belly laugh, which doesn't happen often. The rest of the party was fine too. The kids decorated cupcakes and then ran around a bit before watching shara open her very nice presents and getting picked up. In the evening we relaxed with more pizza and Nanny MacPhee Returns. Very enjoyable and relaxing, especially since Alan got the "party rooms" cleaned!

World record

Tonight I was watching a movie downstairs, alan went to bed early, and I'm hearing noises from shara's room. I try to ignore it because either shes dreaming or being quiet in her room. At about 10 pm, I hear her come out of her room. Nothing wrong, she just wanted to share with me what she had been up to for the past 2 hours. Well, she was busy playing school. She was going to have several kids in her class in a dance and she had written down all the names of the kids and the choreography. Quite impressive. We then cuddled a bit, trying to get relaxed, but she really wanted to sleep in our room. She said she was having megamind thoughts again.
I thought she would have been remembering some of the outlandish looks from this afternoons visit to waltham and the steampunk festival. But she said that wasn't it. We think maybe the c coffee frozen yogurt with hot fudge. Or she could have been so excited from being able to spend time with her cousin lizzy and for tomorrow visit with more family. I told her she should bring her notes to share with everyone tomorrow.

Big Girl Party

Yesterday Shara went to a Rock Diva's bday party and I emailed the mom to see if it was a drop-off or not and it sounded like it was so I dropped Shara off and she went up with the birthday girl and joined right in. What's funny is I got there and the other moms had stayed the whole time! I would have liked to have stayed and talked to them and seen Shara get dolled up. It was a rock diva party. They said she did great getting her hair and makeup done, and watching her face when they did her hair was funny. She was wrinkling her nose as they pulled but she didn't make a peep. She also was a great model - they brought out a runway for them to strut! They took video & pics, so I'll be able to see. Shara also said if I had stayed she would have basically attached herself to me and wouldn't have had so much fun, so it was good I didn't. I told her she should be very proud of herself and it looked like she was.

Pink is nice, but not in the eye

I was in the middle of a conference call today and the school calls to say that Shara has pink eye. Well thanks to Mrs. Ross paying good attention, it was caught before Shara had much pain. I picked her up and we were able to get to the doctors and get the prescription filled. On the way, we stopped at D'angelo's to pick up a couple of sandwiches. In the car I confessed to Shara that I was pretty nervous about putting the ointment in her eye. I was concerned I'd put it in wrong, make a mess, put in too much, etc. She totally understood because she gets the same way too. So we became partners in this venture and before we ate, we went into the bathroom and she held her eye open, looked up and I put in the goo. Then she yelled, "ow, ow!". I asked if it hurt and she said no, so I told her to stop yelling and she did. We then enjoyed a great lunch and will most assuredly be frequenting D'angelo's again.

Shara lost her tooth!

Last night Shara woke us up to let us know she lost her tooth. It was bothering her when she went to take a drink of water so she pulled a little and it came right out!

She's also feeling much better, though when we took her temp last night, it was 103.7. Didn't scare me as much as the night before that when she was practically hallucinating. Last night she was acting fine except that her stomach was still bothering her. This morning it's down to 99.7, so I suspect tomorrow everyone will be back to their normal schedule. Alan's home with her today.

Oahu 2023 - Day 6

Since I believed my official time of isolation was over, I took a bus to Pearl Harbor. There weren't any tours available, but I learned...
